• Do I need a doctor's referral to receive massage therapy?

A doctor's referral is not generally required to book a registered massage therapy appointment. However, your insurance provider may have specific requirements for reimbursement, so we recommend checking your plan.

• Can massage therapy help with neck pain, back pain, or shoulder tension?

Massage therapy may help reduce muscle tension and discomfort and improve mobility. Our therapists can tailor treatments to common concerns such as neck pain, lower back pain, shoulder tightness, and posture-related muscle discomfort.

• Do you offer sports massage and injury recovery treatments?

Yes. We offer sports massage and therapeutic treatments that may support recovery, mobility, and management of muscle tension associated with physical activity. Your treatment will depend on your symptoms and individual needs.

Acupuncture and Cupping

• What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a treatment that involves inserting very fine needles at specific points on the body. It is commonly used as a complementary approach to managing certain types of pain and tension. Our registered acupuncturists can discuss whether it may be suitable for your needs.

• Does acupuncture hurt?

Most people experience little discomfort, although you may notice a brief sensation when a needle is inserted. Sensations vary from person to person. Please let your acupuncturist know if you feel uncomfortable or anxious about needles.

• What is cupping therapy?

Cupping uses cups placed on the skin to create suction. Some people choose it as a complementary treatment for muscle tension and discomfort. Temporary circular marks or bruising may occur after treatment.

• Can I combine massage therapy with acupuncture or cupping?

Depending on your needs, combining treatments may be an option. Discuss your goals, medical history, and preferences with your practitioner so they can determine an appropriate treatment plan.

Insurance and Payment

• Does Massage Empathy accept extended health insurance?

Yes. Registered massage therapy and registered acupuncture services may be eligible for coverage under many extended health insurance plans. Coverage depends on your specific policy, practitioner eligibility, and remaining benefits.

• Do you offer direct billing?

Yes, direct billing is available for eligible RMT and acupuncture appointments with participating insurance providers. Please confirm your insurer's eligibility and direct-billing arrangements with us before your appointment.

• Will my insurance cover the full cost of my treatment?

Not necessarily. Your reimbursement depends on your plan's annual maximum, coverage percentage, per-visit limit, deductible, and other policy conditions. We recommend contacting your insurance provider before your visit to confirm your benefits.

• What happens if direct billing is declined?

If a claim cannot be processed because of a system issue or insurance ineligibility, you may need to pay for the appointment and submit the eligible receipt to your insurance provider for reimbursement.

• Do you accept ICBC claims?

We accept eligible ICBC clients and offer direct billing for qualifying treatments. Coverage limits and claim requirements may vary depending on your accident and treatment eligibility. Please contact us to confirm your coverage before booking.

Appointments and Preparation

• What should I do before my first appointment?

We recommend arriving a little early to complete any required intake forms. Be prepared to discuss your symptoms, medical history, relevant injuries, medications, and treatment goals with your practitioner.

• Can I request a specific therapist?

Yes, you can select a preferred therapist when booking, subject to availability. If you have a preference for treatment style, language, or another relevant consideration, please let us know.

• What is your cancellation policy?

Our published cancellation policy states that appointments cancelled within 24 hours of the scheduled time are subject to a $40 cancellation fee. Please contact the clinic as soon as possible if you need to change your appointment.

• What if I am running late or need to reschedule?

Please contact us as soon as possible. We will do our best to accommodate changes, subject to appointment availability and our clinic policies.
